An April 11 report from IGN originally elevated slot May 8 as the new US pre-order date, but the publication has since walked that back. In fact, that date was already the one slated for Nintendo to confirm the first batch of pre-orders through its site. The Nintendo Switch 2 has a 1080p 7.9-inch display with a 120Hz refresh and HDR compatibility. It also supports up to 4K output at 120Hz (with variable refresh rates) when docked. We don’t know who is making Donkey Kong Bananza, but all signs point to it being Nintendo’s star team.
However, it noted that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” We now have more information on which games are working thanks to a guide Nintendo put together. Nintendo confirmed in November 2024 that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible. It will also feature access to Nintendo Online, so users will be able to play all of those old retro titles.

Some impressive third-party titles like Dynasty Warriors Origins, Ballard of Antara, and Monster Hunter Wilds also showed up but had 2025 release windows. While Nintendo’s statement didn’t go into specifics, Pocketpair eventually revealed that three patents were at the center of the lawsuit.
Xbox leadership has been more wishy-washy when it comes to confirming how prevalent and widespread this initiative will be. We’ll have to wait and see if games like Avowed and Fable wind up going multiplatform in 2025. Nintendo confirms that the Nintendo Switch 2 will release on June 5th 2025.
